Hanjuku Hero is a very interesting and wakky strategy Famicom RPG released by Square in 1988. One of the themes of this game is that you the player control several units in an attempt to take control of other castles. If your main unit loses, the game is over. While you move your units, there are random special events, also when you run into a castle, a battle ensues. You also control eggs that hatch a monster, sometimes this appears to be random as to which monster you will use in the battle.

I can say little about the plot of the game at this time. I am learning how to play this game, as well as trying to figure out the wakky puns and odd humor of the game. The one thing that I know at this time is that you have three scenarios to choose from and you can name your character or main unit.

Like many games at this time, the mapper used is a MMC1 or S*ROM PCB. This is a 16K bank select game with no provisions for VROM, since the CHR is embedded inside of the program. Most, if not all NES emulators support mapper 1.

I have been sadly neglecting this game for a long time as the game is rather difficult to hack and translate. Progress resumes! Stay tuned and read the updates!

Update History

08-21-11 - I've made some serious progress in hacking this game. I also added 6 more screen shots to show this progress. Everything has been hacked in the game except for the monthly event, monster tower dialog and ending dialog. Those three blocks of text are waiting for a translation. Some of the text has been translated by various people such as Snark for the battle messages, Paul Jensen for some of the monthly event dialog, Sheex for various spot translations and some of the monthly event dialog.

01-21-09 - Hacking has resumed on this project. Some screen shots have been added to show progress. sqpat has been translating screen shots, as well as 8x8 Kanji identification. Scripts are being redumped and labled. I also mention that all of my work was somehow lost over the years, so I have started from scratch.

06-01-01 - Approximate project start date.
